Every September, my calendar seems to overflow with commitments—work trips, kids’ sports, after-school activities, and even Poppy’s grooming appointment. It’s as if the back-to-school season hits and my schedule goes into overdrive. I’m sure many of you can relate. Despite years of blogging about organizing routines, supplies, and drop zones (check out my previous posts on routines, supplies, rolling carts, organizing with kids, and protocols), this year I want to shift focus to something equally important: managing the overwhelming sense of overcommitment that often accompanies this time of year.
September tends to be my busiest month, packed with professional deadlines, personal appointments, and social engagements. The constant juggling act—like coordinating carpooling while on a work Zoom call—often leaves me feeling frazzled. After discussing this with several friends and clients, I realized I’m not alone in this struggle. As a result, our schedule is fully booked with client appointments through September. Many of us are eager to regain control over our lives and physical spaces as the new school year kicks off.
Breaking the Cycle of Overcommitment
So, how can we effectively manage overcommitment during this busy time? My answer: organizing. This involves prioritizing what truly matters to you, whether that’s managing your daily routine, your to-do list, or your physical space. While it might seem time-consuming, I advocate for critically assessing your calendar and identifying your essential commitments. Then, fill the rest of your schedule with activities that bring you joy, support your health, and enrich your life—not just more work obligations to stay ‘busy.’
I’ve already started adjusting my back-to-school schedule and feel lighter and less overwhelmed. Even though my month is still busy, I’ve intentionally carved out time for myself, quality family moments, and self-care.
Your Turn: What Will You Say ‘No’ To?
Now, I want to hear from you: What’s one thing you’re saying ‘no’ to this September to avoid overcommitting? For example, are you opting for store-bought cookies instead of homemade ones for the back-to-school picnic? Or perhaps you’re taking on one less client this month to finally schedule that long-overdue pedicure or dentist appointment?
PS. I’ve moved the date of my Organizing Life: Through + After Divorce Workshop to October 7th. I understand that September is a hectic time for many, and I want to ensure as many of you as possible can attend live. Please feel free to share this updated information with others
