In only a few more weeks, true yard sale season will be officially over. Honestly, I am not a huge yard sale person but I have had a handful of them. I have also worked as an organizer putting them together for clients. Just this past weekend, my girls convinced me to do it again. As a professional organizer, I knew that having a yard sale would be the perfect “excuse” to get my house free of clutter and have enthusiastic helpers to assist in the process. As a mother, I knew that throwing together a yard sale at the last minute was going to be a lot of work. I didn’t know if it was up for the challenge.

Just this month, I was featured in the July/August issues of Women’s Day Magazine talking turning clutter into cash at yard sales and what it takes to put on a successful yard sale. I am a big believer in making the yard sale that much more “shopable” so people are able to see what they want and need to purchase easily. People should feel like they are in a store being able to browse up and down the aisles with different categorizes of items separated out. They will then be more likely to buy!

After several “please mom, we will help, it will be fun” statements, I gave in and we had a yard sale. And here is what I learned this time around with our yard sale:

1. Yard sales are hard work and take time, if you want them to be successful.

2. People love a good deal and are shopping your yard sale only for those good deals.

3. Yard sales shouldn’t really be about the money but about clearing the clutter.

4. EVERYONE has clutter they can part with at all times, even a professional organizer.

5. There are some pretty wonderful people out there that will do extraordinary things with your clutter. A true win/win situation and more reasons to let your clutter go.

6. Kids are huge draws at yard sales.

7. A lemonade stand is a must.
