There are two types of people in this world: those who like to shop with others, and those who like to shop alone. Whichever you may be, there are obvious benefits to both: by yourself can mean less distractions; however, a second set of eyes can be helpful to ask the right questions, and keep you focused on the present. . . What is. . . And not what once was or could be. The same works for closet organization! When we look at our closets, we often see a hodgepodge of our immediate present, our idealized future, and our romanticized past: the clothes we wear every single week (often black, am I right?); the ones we envision ourselves wearing when we lose 20 lbs, at our next formal event, or even when a particular style comes back (believe me, they all do!); and those from the past, which bring us a certain nostalgia we can’t bear to part with, or even deal with. Thus, we have so many clothes in our closets that we either have never worn or will never wear again. Here are some tips to declutter and organize your closet:
-
Always think about the present. Stay focused on the now, the immediate future, and perhaps, the most recent past. If you love it and wear it every week, keep it. It gets more tricky though as you venture forward or backward.
-
Start by trying on the item. Does it fit? Do you like the look of it? Do you like how you feel in it? Does it feel comfortable? 85% of women have clothes in their closets that do not fit. Here is where a second opinion can come in handy.
-
Invite a friend over. Tell her you are going through your closet. Offer her to do the same with her closet. If it’s someone you think may want some of your old clothes (or the ones you hardly wear), even better. Use this to draw them in!
-
Make it fun. Play music. Let your friend lounge. Hold up every single piece. Try it on, and ask yourself the right questions: do I like it, do I love it, do I wear it?
Believe me, you’re not the only one who has screamed, slammed a closet door, or balled their eyes out over the mass of clothes you’re not sure what to do with. . . Or maybe even how to do without. I challenge you to go through your closet today and remove five items that you can and should do without. If you can’t find five, I’ll say 10! You may feel like you are at a loss, clothes wise, but believe me, you will be saving on time and energy! Less sometimes really is more, especially when it means shopping in the future. 😉 Below are some of my favorite organizing products!
